Petsafe - Wireless and In Ground Pet Fences

PetSafe - Wireless and In Ground Pet Fences
The following blog is based up on a presentation by Alex Bewley our Rep at PetSafe.
How Do You Keep Your Dog Safe With A Pet Fence?
PetSafe says that pet fences save lives. Thousands of dogs and cats are lost or injured each year when they stray outside of their gardens and enclosures. Pet fences can stop tragedies happening by teaching your pet to stay safe behind the boundary that you create. PetSafe fences are made to eusre that one or multiple pets can be contained as long as each pet wears a collar.
Two Forms Of Pet Fence:
- Wireless Pet Fence - there is no wire to bury and PetSafe say that this is a portable fence option that lets you create a circuclar barrier that is asjustable in size up to 3/4 an acre.
- simple and convenient set up
- 1-2 hours product set up
- covers cicurlar area up to 3/4 acre
- portable for holidays and trips
- In Ground Pet Fence - this option lets you customise a barrier in any shape and size up to 25 acres with buried wire.
- bury wires around your garden
- DIY weekend project
- customise pet area up to 25 acres
- create keep out zones (pond or patio areas etc)
How Do Pet Fences Work?
Every pet fence consists of a transmitter and a receiver collar. The transmitter generates the boundary either in the air in the case of wireless or via a buried wire for in-ground fences.
As your pet approches the boundary the collar produces a vibration/tone to warn the pet that it is getting too close to the boundary. If they continue to try and cross the boundary the collar will produce a harmless electronic 'static' stimulation to tell your pet that it needs to turn back. After the initial training period of 2-4 weeks most pets will understand and respect their new boundaries and will actively choose to remain with in the boundary.
The training process is very important and it must be followed to ensure safety and a satisfacory end result.
Boundary Training
As mentioned above as your pet approaches the boundary the system teaches them to see their limits with use of boundary flags. This visual cue is extremely important and 'flags' the boundary to the pet before the tone, vibration or static stimulation kick in on the collar. As the pet nears the boundary the pet will receive a safe but surprising correction from the collar reminding them to stay in the garden.
Step by step training instructions are included and are also available on line for reference. I reiterate again... these instructions must be followed to ensure a safe use of the product and to get a rewarding outcome from your pet.
When Might You Need A Pet Fence?
There are various reasons you may want to purchase a pet fence and honestly it is usually a last resort.
Perhaps you:
- Moved to a new home and need to secure your boundary
- Have a new dog who needs to be contained
- Require to keep your pet contained due to safety concerns or livestock
- Have neighbours who have complained about your pets
- Are worried about a new behaviour your pet has started displaying
All of these reasons could be why you are looking for a pet fence. We also appreciate that a pet fence is not for everyone.

An Update On Training Collars & Containment Systems For Pets
We have updated info on the proposed ban of training collars from Petsafe:
“In April 2023, the UK Government announced that it planned to ban remote training collars in England, effective 1 February 2024. However, as of today the House of Commons has not approved the legislation and as a result, the ban of electronic collars cannot come into force on the 1 February. Electronic collars are not banned in England currently.”
